Orissa Agriculture , some very useful Information

The State Government has decided to increase seed replacement rate in paddy to 25 per cent by the end of the 11th Five- Year Plan.In view of the possibility of reduction of paddy production during the year, the State Government has decided to open seed centres in each gram panchayat. Besides, a decision has been taken to intensify the seed village scheme.

Other programmes include establishment of seed storage godowns and seed processing plants. Mobile seed processing plants will be introduced to help farmers in interior areas. Campaign for seed treatment will be launched among the farmers.

Out of the total cultivated area of 61.5 lakh hectares, 70 per cent (40.17 lakh hectare) is acidic and four lakh hectares saline. Three lakh hectares are water-logged.

The reasons for low productivity have been identified as lack of assured irrigation, low seed replacement ratio, low level of fertiliser consumption and mechanisation and weak extension machinery.

The State Government has taken up application of lime (paper mill sludge and gypsum) on a largescale and promotion of green manure like dhanicha as soil amelioration measures. Besides, bio-fertiliser is also being promoted.
