The State Excise Department has decided to set up three testing centres one each at Sambalpur, Cuttack and Berhampur. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the Excise Minister Debi Prasad Mishra on Tuesday at the State Secretariat. The laboratories would be operational by the first week of June.
As the Excise Department has no laboratory, it has to send the opium, bhang and ganja for testing to the Laboratory of the Drugs Controller. Around 6,000 cases are coming up to the Centre per annum. In the first phase, liquor would be tested. The laboratory would work under Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue Department.
