2,000 new police posts created in State.

n a bid to facilitate speedier promotions, the Orissa Police has created nearly 2,000 posts for the first time in the history of State. The State Government has not only created the posts for better promotional avenues for the serving police officers but has also processed the file for direct recruitment of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs). A notification to create 1,997 posts was issued on Wednesday by the Department of Home.
Principal Secretary Home Tarun Kanti Mishra, who was all along favouring direct recruitment of DSPs, has cleared the file after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's green signal for the move to infuse young blood into the State police force. Gopal Chandra Nanda, after taking over as the DGP, had sent the proposal for both improving the cadre strength and direct recruitment of DSPs.
In all, 380 posts of DSP have been created against the strength of 197 for years. Out of the 380 DSP posts, 75 have been earmarked for direct recruitment. According to sources, the recruitment will be done in a phased manner with an annual average intake of 10 to 15 directly recruited DSPs. They will be treated as Class II DSPs with a scale of Rs 8,000-Rs 13,500.
The Orissa Public Service Commission (OPSC) will soon be notified for the recruitment. After the recruitment, these officers will undergo two years of training, and after five years of service they will be promoted to Class I, said Additional DGP Prakash Chandra Mishra.
Similarly, for faster promotions of the serving cops, 307 posts of Sub-Inspectors have been upgraded to the Inspector rank. This will facilitate speedier promotions for the serving cops, said Mishra. Earlier, an SI of Police was receiving promotion after 16 to 18 years of service, and now they will get it with 10 years of job.
Similarly, an Inspector of Police will be receiving promotions within six years of service. Constables will have more scope for promotions as 1,507 new posts of ASI have been carved out.
