Puri, Bhubaneswar, Konark and Chilika have been identified among the top 20 tourist destinations of the country, State Tourism Department officials said on Monday.
These sites have been identified as tourist destinations with an eye on wooing the potential foreign and domestic tourists. Besides, the Taj Mahal in Agra, Varanasi-Sarnath (both in UP), Bodhgaya-Rajgir-Nalanda (Bihar), illumination of monuments in Delhi, Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu) and Haridwar-Rishikesh (Uttarakhand) have been selected as some other destinations.
Under this new initiative, financial assistance up to Rs 25 crore will be provided for development of a mega destination and Rs 50 crore for a mega circuit. Apart from this financial assistance, the Union Ministry of Tourism is also working with other Central Ministries and concerned State Governments to achieve convergence and synergy with other Government programmes so that the impact of investment on these destinations is maximised, officials added.
