Centre to provide funds to increase Cereal and Edible Oil production in Orissa.

The Centre has reportedly agreed to provide huge funds for the development of agriculture in the State in the current financial year.The funds would be utilised for enhancing the production of cereals and edible oil seeds. This was stated by the Secretary, Union Ministry of Agriculture PK Mishra after he called on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat on Friday.Briefing the media about the assurance made by Mishra, Secretary, Agriculture UP Singh said the Centre has put stress on enhancing the production of oil seeds and pulses in the State.
Though the country has been self-reliant in the production of paddy, it has not yet been able to be self-sufficient in the production of cereals and edible oil. The country aims to produce 227 million tonne of paddy in the current year. "Similarly, the paddy production in Orissa has increased over the years," he said, adding that the country imports 40 per cent of its required cereals and two million tonne of edible oil.
Under the Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, the Centre would provide Rs 115 crore and Rs 61 crore under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) programme.He further said the Centre has given a proposal to introduce Weather based Crop insurance programme. Under the National Horticulture Programme, the Centre has also reportedly agreed to give Rs 95 crore, Singh said.
