Intangible Cultural Heritage around Konark to be documented during 11th Plan

After successfully documenting the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of the world heritage site of Bhimteka in Madhya Pradesh (MP) during the 10th Five Year Plan, the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Bhopal has decided to document the ICH of two more world heritage sites, Konark in Orissa and Hampi in Karnataka during the 11th Five Year Plan period.
The IGRM in association with the Centre for Heritage Studies (CHS), Bhubaneswar on Friday organised a national workshop on documenting the ICH around the world heritage site of Konark. Former Vice Chancellor of Sambalpur University LK Mohapatra inaugurated the workshop. Former Union Culture secretary Sitakant Mohapatra stressed the need of preserving various art forms, cultures and sculptors around the famous Sun Temple at Konark. He emphasised the need for documenting different aspects of cultural heritage that lives in the closest vicinity of Konark temple. Former chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) S Settar and Director IGRMS KK Basa attended the workshop. Executive Member of CHS SP Rath presided over the meet. "India is a signatory to UNESCO convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Both the Union Government and UNESCO are emphasising on documenting various aspects of intangible heritage. Secondly, a comprehensive approach to heritage management makes it imperative not to confine to tangible heritage only. Rather it should include various aspects of traditional knowledge system, otherwise known as intangible heritage," said Prof Basa. He further said the IGRMS and CHS are studying to determine the various issues and aspects of ICH around Konark. It includes the documentation on fairs and festivals, myth and legends, arts and craft and music performing arts etc around Konark
