Orissa:Seven hubs recognised for industries

Orissa Government has identified seven places as major upcoming hubs for ancillary and downstream industries in steel, power, aluminium and cement sectors.Making a presentation on prospects of benefits of big industries percolating down to small-scale industries here on Friday evening, Director of Industries Hemant Sharma said Jharsuguda and Angul could be the next hub ancillary industries for thermal power generation. While Sterlite Industries was recognized to be nucleus of downstream industries development in Jharsuguda, Navbharat Power Private Limited would drive the growth in Angul region, Mr. Sharma said.Similarly, concentration of ancillary industries is expected to be more in Paradip area. South Korean steel major POSCO’s proposed steel mill may witness small companies reaping benefits. Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s (IPICOL) proposed refinery complex at this port town may galvanize the growth further in petrochemical sector.
Moreover, Kalinganagar in Jajpur district, where a dozen steel industries were coming up, was viewed as the next hub for stainless steel and its associated products. Grasim and OCL India will have major stake in creating a zone for ancillary industries in Sundargarh, Mr. Sharma said. RSB transmission may drive the auto-component industries at Choudwar.

Industrial Investment Promotion Corporation of Orissa Limited (IPICOL) studied that 19 different downstream industries and 36 ancillary industries could survive alone by establishment of big steel projects. The State Government has so far signed memoranda of understanding with 66 companies, of which 45 will alone go for steel industries while 219 other large and medium industries are already operating in the Sate.As many as nine public sector companies in the State have been utilising services of 217 small companies for their operation. The worth of orders being placed by PSUs touches Rs. 100 crores annually.
The State Government identified 197 items for promotion of ancillary industries. “Due to function of Nilachal Ispat Nigm Limited, Mid East Integrated Steel, Maithan Ispat and VISA industries in Kalinga Nagar as many as nine ancillary and four downstream industries had come up,” the Director of Industries said.
Besides, 76 projects are under various stages of implementation.
