More capacity building in Naxal areas:Orissa CM

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced that the future plan for modernisation of State Police included greater emphasis on further capacity building in Naxalite-affected districts.To a question from Ashwini Kumar Patra (BJD) and Baidhar Mallik (BJP), the Chief Minister said the plan includes strengthening of the intelligence wing and special operation group, revamping of training infrastructure and equipment and upgradation of mobility and reduction in response time of police.
Patnaik said that while planning and taking steps for modernisation of the State Police force, the State Government has kept in view the measures taken for police modernisation in different states. Communication network will be upgraded and scientific methods of investigation will be improved, he said.Stating that a number of steps have been taken to modernise the police force, the Chief Minister said that the number of Orissa State Armed Police (OSAP) battalions had been raised and strength of police personnel in the police stations in the Naxalite-affected areas and industrial clusters has been augmented.Besides, essential equipment like bullet-proof jackets, helmets, body protector sets and global positioning systems for anti-Naxalite operations have also been procured.To a question from Bhaskar Madhei (BJP), Patnaik said that four forest divisions were engaged in protection of Similipal forests. He said that 94 anti-smuggling and anti-poaching camps have been set up for prevention of tree felling and poaching in Similipal National Park.He said that 716 local youths have been engaged as tiger protection force volunteers. Besides, 143 eco-development committees have been constituted to check illicit felling and poaching.
