Orissa Tourism plans Eco-Camp with International Standard at Chilika Lake

Though Orissa is one of the most naturally gifted States, it has so far no ecotourism facility. Of late, the State's Department of Tourism is planning a number of ecotourism products. The most significant step being taken is the proposal for development of a tented accommodation complex at Sanakuda island off Rambha on the Chilika lake. The facility will provide a unique experience for all discerning visitors with international-standard amenities, said Tourism and Excise Minister Debi Prasad Mishra.
Govt.of Orissa is working on various options available for development ecotourism products for environment-friendly visitors to the State. The new provision will provide a tranquil surrounding with star hotel category comforts and safety in the well-preserved ecology in its virginity, said Tourism Secretary Parag Gupta. The project is planned in sync with Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ)-I norms applicable for the purpose as the Chilika lagoon is under CRZ-I, said Gupta. The Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) will ensure all eco-friendly materials to be used for setting up eco-camps, said an official. All biodegradable materials will be used in the camp site, with use of polythene being totally prohibited.
Open-air accommodation with 11 executive Swiss cottage tents will provide visual pleasures in an extraordinary, yet personalised environment, he said. Provision of sweet water and chemical toilets will also be there. Provision of quality and hygienic food and beverages to all visitors with a special emphasis on local resources and cuisine will be available. Added to all this, the advantage of qualified boat operators, quality interpreters and professional security personnel will be provided.
The OTDC, which has an offer to outsource the operations and management of the tents, has identified a professional group for the job. However, till date, the authorities of Ganjam district are yet to alienate 92 acres of revenue land for the purpose. Once the land alienation process is completed and clearance of the Union Ministry of Forest and Environment is in hand, the State Tourism Department would speed up the setting up its eco-camp in the Chilika lagoon, said an official.
Earlier, the Tourism Department had moved for a similar type of eco-camp near Ramchandi on the Konark-Puri marine drive, which received sanction of the district authorities of Puri. So, the department is going ahead with the proposed 'Sun Rise Eco-Camp' at Ramchandi.
